Nico Elvedi Set for Leeds Move from Borussia Mönchengladbach

Borussia Mönchengladbach central defender Nico Elvedi is currently undergoing his medical in Yorkshire, with his move to the Premier League club Leeds expected to be completed soon. Gladbach is anticipated to receive approximately €10 million and will retain a 15 percent sell-on clause. Elvedi has already agreed to personal terms with Leeds, signing a contract through 2029.

The framework of the transfer had been finalized, with a preceding obstacle involving Leeds defender Sebastiaan Bornauw. Bornauw's potential departure from Elland Road was the final step required before Elvedi could finalize his move. This obstacle has now been cleared, as Bornauw has agreed to join Hamburg on loan, with a reported €4-5 million purchase option.

If Elvedi successfully passes his medical, his departure will mark the end of an eleven-year association with Gladbach. The former FC Zürich defender joined Borussia-Park in 2015 and became one of the club's longest-serving first-team regulars. His exit necessitates further adjustments to coach Eugen Polanski's defensive strategy.

Elvedi and Kevin Diks were initially expected to be the primary central defensive pairing for pre-season, with Diks having publicly expressed his desire to continue playing alongside the Swiss defender. This pair was envisioned to support Polanski's transition from a back three to a 4-2-3-1 formation.

This projected partnership was also a significant element in recent tactical previews for Borussia Mönchengladbach. Consequently, Elvedi's impending departure means sporting director Rouven Schröder needs to secure another centre-back before the transfer window closes.

Gladbach Considering Multiple Replacements for Elvedi

Sporting director Schröder has confirmed that another defender will be sought if Elvedi departs. Birmingham City's Phil Neumann and OH Leuven's young talent Roggerio Nyakossi are reportedly among the candidates being considered. Diogo Leite, a former Union Berlin centre-back, represents another potentially high-profile option following the expiry of his contract, although competition for the Portuguese defender could present financial challenges.

Gladbach is also reportedly exploring the possibility of bringing Ko Itakura back to Borussia-Park from Ajax. The Japan international only left the club last summer and would bring immediate familiarity with the Bundesliga and his former team. While Lausanne-Sport defender Karim Sow and Peñarol's Nahuel Herrera were previously linked, they are reportedly no longer under consideration.
