Nintendo Switch 2 Production Cut as Demand Appears to Be Flagging
Despite an initial strong launch marked by record-breaking early sales, a recent report suggests a noticeable decline in demand for Nintendo's Switch 2 console, especially within the United States market.
Sources familiar with the matter informed Bloomberg that Nintendo is significantly scaling back its Switch 2 production. Manufacturing targets have been reduced by a third, from 6 million units to 4 million, with this decreased output projected to continue into April.
A key factor contributing to this downturn appears to be the performance of its game titles. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, which was anticipated to be a major Christmas sales driver for Switch 2, reportedly sold under 1 million copies in December, falling significantly short of Nintendo's projections. Reviewers noted that while 'Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is enjoyable enough... and has glimpses of vintage Metroid shining through, but this game could and should have been so much more.'
Nintendo's stock price initially dipped in response to these reports but saw a recent recovery thanks to the surprisingly strong performance of Pokémon Pokopia. Hailed as 'one of the best spin-offs the franchise has ever seen,' Pokémon Pokopia achieved over 2 million sales within just four days of its release.
The focus now shifts to upcoming titles expected to boost the Switch 2's performance in its second year. These include From Software's currently undated Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods, along with Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, and a range of other third-party releases.
Beyond game performance, Nintendo's hardware also confronts broader challenges. Economic pressures, such as the increased demand for computer components due to AI advancements, volatile tariffs, and geopolitical conflicts, have impacted supply chains and manufacturing. Furthermore, there's a growing perception that dedicated consoles are losing their role as the primary entry point for new gamers, with smartphones and tablets increasingly filling that niche instead.
Despite these concerns, the Switch 2 is reportedly performing exceptionally well in Japan. However, its overall global sales trajectory has led Nintendo to maintain its full-year sales forecast for the Switch 2 at 19 million units, a conservative approach Bloomberg noted the company typically deviates from when performance is strong.
