Jahmai Simpson-Pusey Embraces Cologne's Growing English Influence: "We Have Some English Culture in the Team Now."

Jahmai Simpson-Pusey quickly felt at home in the Bundesliga. The Manchester City academy product joined 1. FC Cologne in January under challenging circumstances. He moved to the cathedral city after a brief, unsuccessful loan spell at Celtic. The young defender initially arrived on loan to address an injury crisis in central defense.

Within days, Simpson-Pusey was playing in the Bundesliga. He became an immediate starter and faced Harry Kane after playing full matches in his first two German top-flight appearances.

Months later, the decision to stay in Cologne was straightforward.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity I've been given," Simpson-Pusey told reporters at the Cologne training ground on Wednesday. "I'm thankful for everyone around me and all the support."

When asked about his decision to sign a permanent contract with the club, the 20-year-old stated, "It was pretty much a 'no brainer.' It's Bundesliga football. I might not have known if I would play, but my current situation is very good."

Cologne invested €6 million to secure Simpson-Pusey from Manchester City permanently. He progressed from an emergency January signing to one of the club's key long-term defensive assets.

He is no longer the only young Englishman trying to establish himself in Cologne.

Simpson-Pusey Welcomes Moore and Heskey

Cologne added another Manchester City academy product, Reigan Heskey, over the summer. They also brought in highly-rated Tottenham Hotspur attacker Mikey Moore. For Simpson-Pusey, their arrivals offer benefits beyond the field.

"Yeah, that's good," Simpson-Pusey said when asked about his two English teammates. "We have some English culture in the team now. I can joke with them. Before, not everyone understood me or what I was saying."

"Now that they are here, they understand," Simpson-Pusey continued. "They are two good additions to the team as well."

Evidence already supports this assessment.

Heskey played a significant role in Cologne's preseason. Moore quickly made an impact after arriving from North London. Moore made an impressive Bundesliga debut against Stuttgart, assisting Cologne's only goal by passing to his compatriot in space.

Cologne Offers English Youngsters a Familiar Environment

Head coach René Wagner further enhances Cologne's growing Anglophone presence. Wagner, who spent part of his playing and coaching career in the United States, speaks fluent English and earned his UEFA Pro coaching license in England. His English proficiency has been evident during his time in the Bundesliga. Wagner held an impromptu English exchange with Bayer Leverkusen head coach Kasper Hjulmand during a notable post-match press conference last season.

Cologne's small slice of English culture continues to grow.
