Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Changes Double XP Tokens to In-Match Countdown
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is shifting its double XP token system. Tokens will now only deplete while players are actively in a match, not during real-world time. This change applies to tokens accrued from previous Call of Duty titles and Warzone as well.
Previously, activating a double XP token started its countdown immediately. Time spent outside of matches, such as customizing loadouts or waiting for friends, would waste the token's duration. This mechanic has been a consistent source of player dissatisfaction, with calls for reform accompanying each new yearly release.
The issue is not unique to Call of Duty; Battlefield shares a similar system that has also frustrated its community. Battlefield Studios previously announced a similar change to their tokens, only to retract it, causing further player upset.
As Modern Warfare 4 approaches its release, Activision appears focused on re-engaging lapsed players. Recent announcements include a pre-order loyalty discount, a skin toggle for Warzone, updates on matchmaking, and now this double XP token adjustment. These moves primarily benefit long-term players who may have grown weary of the series.
Modern Warfare 4 is set for release on October 23rd for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch 2.
