Werder Bremen in Advanced Talks to Sell Romano Schmid to Serie A Newcomers

Werder Bremen is reportedly in advanced negotiations with newly-promoted Italian Serie A side Frosinone Calcio for the transfer of Austrian international Romano Schmid. The deal is anticipated to be finalized in the coming days.

The Bundesliga club is expected to receive a substantial fee in the high single-digit millions of euros, with potential for the figure to reach eight figures through performance-based bonuses.

This potential sale would provide Werder Bremen with much-needed financial flexibility for further squad strengthening. This comes after the recent sale of goalkeeper Mio Backhaus to Freiburg for €12 million.

Schmid's contract situation has increased the pressure on Werder to consider a transfer. He is entering the final year of his contract, and no concrete discussions regarding an extension have occurred.

Romano Schmid has previously been linked with a move away from Werder Bremen. Last summer, Premier League clubs such as West Ham United, Aston Villa, and Fulham showed interest, but no transfer materialized. Despite continued interest from the Premier League, the 26-year-old remained with Bremen and took on a more prominent role within the team.

The move to Frosinone Calcio, a club near Rome that has recently returned to Serie A for the fourth time, comes as a somewhat surprising development. The Italian club has recently seen a change in ownership, with US investment fund Clara Vista acquiring an 80 percent stake and setting ambitious goals.

Schmid joined Werder Bremen from RB Salzburg in January 2019. He then spent 18 months on loan at Wolfsberger AC. Upon his return, he was part of the squad that experienced Werder's relegation in 2021 but was also instrumental in their immediate promotion back to the Bundesliga.

In recent seasons, the creative midfielder has consistently achieved double-digit goal contributions in the Bundesliga, setting a personal best of four goals and eight assists in the 2023/24 campaign.

While his departure would be a significant loss for Daniel Thioune's squad, the transfer would generate important funds for Werder Bremen to pursue additional signings during the summer transfer window.
