Newcastle United Eyeing Felix Nmecha from Borussia Dortmund

Newcastle United has initiated contact with the representatives of Felix Nmecha, signaling an intensifying effort to sign the Borussia Dortmund midfielder. According to Sky Germany, the Premier League club is preparing to make a bid for the 25-year-old. This move is reportedly being considered in the wake of Bruno Guimarães' departure to Arsenal, and following the significant revenue generated from the sales of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali.

However, initial discussions with Nmecha's camp do not confirm an agreement or his desire to leave Dortmund. Sport Bild indicates that the German international is not actively seeking a transfer to St James' Park, and Dortmund is equally committed to keeping him. The Bundesliga club is said to be open to serious negotiations only if an extraordinary offer, estimated to be between €100m and €120m, is presented.

Newcastle Revives Long-Standing Interest in Nmecha

Newcastle identified Nmecha as their primary candidate to replace Bruno Guimarães earlier this week. Their interest in the midfielder, however, extends back even before his move to Dortmund. The Magpies had considered signing Nmecha prior to his transfer from Wolfsburg to Dortmund in the summer of 2023. Dortmund had paid approximately €30m for him as part of their squad rebuilding efforts after Jude Bellingham's transfer to Real Madrid.

Nmecha's debut season at the Westfalenstadion was hampered by recurrent injury problems, which prevented him from establishing a consistent rhythm and fully showcasing his capabilities. His importance within the team saw a significant rise after the appointment of coach Niko Kovac. Nmecha evolved into a crucial element of the midfield, contributing physical presence, resilience against pressure, and the ability to swiftly transition recovered possession into counter-attacking opportunities.

A tactical preview for the 2025/26 campaign by Get German Football News described Nmecha as Dortmund's "silent, unsung hero" due to his effectiveness in breaking up play and initiating counters. His versatility allowed him to operate in various midfield roles, excelling particularly when deployed higher up the pitch where his forward carrying and technical skill could be best utilized.

Furthermore, Nmecha developed a promising partnership with fellow English youth international Jobe Bellingham during the Club World Cup and subsequent summer preparations. Both Felix and his brother Lukas Nmecha, having spent part of their upbringing in England, are fluent in English.

Nmecha's Value at Dortmund Has Dramatically Increased

Last summer, Inter Milan and Manchester United showed interest when Dortmund was reportedly seeking around €60m. This valuation was already double the amount BVB had paid Wolfsburg. Nmecha's significance to the team has only grown since then.

The midfielder became a pivotal player in Dortmund's successful season, solidified his place in the German national team, and emerged as one of the country's more impressive performers during a challenging World Cup campaign.

Dortmund acknowledged his development by extending his contract until 2030 in March. This agreement reportedly includes a release clause of €80m, active next summer, which will then decrease to €70m in 2028. Neither of these clauses can be activated during the current transfer window. Consequently, Newcastle would need to negotiate directly with Dortmund and offer a sum considerably exceeding the value of Nmecha's future release clauses.

Dortmund Has Built its Midfield Around Nmecha

A sale in the region of €100m or more would represent a substantial profit for Dortmund and provide them with considerable financial resources for further squad strengthening. However, the timing of such a potential deal presents significant challenges.

Coach Niko Kovac has structured his midfield around Nmecha's ability to cover extensive ground, resist pressure, and effectively link defensive recoveries with attacking transitions. Replacing these key attributes so close to the start of the Bundesliga season would be a far more complex task than simply reinvesting the transfer fee.

The player's current stance further complicates matters. While a return to the Premier League is reportedly a potential long-term aspiration for Nmecha, he does not appear to be pushing for a transfer this summer.

Sporting director Nils-Ole Book recently indicated that only an exceptionally high offer might open the door for a transfer, stating, "I would consider that [a transfer] highly unlikely. Of course, there can theoretically always be astronomical sums, but in Felix’s case, I can pretty safely rule it out this summer."

Newcastle possesses the financial capability to test Dortmund's resolve. However, it remains uncertain whether they are willing to meet Dortmund's asking price of €100m to €120m, and whether Nmecha himself can be persuaded to make the move.
