Tom Bischof Scores First Bayern Goals, Eyes World Cup Spot

Germany U21 captain Tom Bischof recently celebrated a significant milestone, netting his first Bundesliga goals for Bayern Munich. His two goals were crucial in Bayern's thrilling 3-2 comeback victory against SC Freiburg, a performance that has garnered attention as the World Cup approaches.

Bischof's goals, alongside one from fellow young German talent Lennart Karl (assisted by Joshua Kimmich), highlighted a strong outing for the young players. Kimmich himself played a pivotal role in Karl's dramatic 90+9 winner, demonstrating veteran leadership.

Bischof's Journey at Bayern Munich

Since joining the German champions on a free transfer this summer, the 20-year-old Bischof faced stiff competition in Bayern's midfield, with established national team players like Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, and Aleksandar Pavlovic ahead of him. Coach Vincent Kompany ingeniously repurposed Bischof as a makeshift left-back, a role in which the highly talented youngster excelled, registering three assists from both left and right-back positions in the league. National Team Aspirations

Bischof's path to the national team has been unique. He initially bypassed the U21 level, earning his first senior German cap last June. However, at the start of the 2025/26 campaign, he was assigned to Antonio Di Salvo's U21 squad, where he quickly made an impact. After a brief adjustment period, Bischof delivered a hat-trick for the U21s last November and proudly wore the captain's armband in both fixtures during the recent March international break. These achievements have led many to endorse him for Julian Nagelsmann’s World Cup squad.

On the World Cup Dream

Speaking at a recent press conference, Bischof expressed his strong desire to represent Germany at the World Cup. "Of course, I still have hope and would be very happy to be a part of it," he stated. While acknowledging contact with the national team coach, he kept details private, adding optimistically, "I haven't booked any vacation for the summer yet."

Reflecting on His First Bayern Goals

Bischof conveyed a sense of relief and accomplishment after scoring for Bayern. "Finally," he remarked, recalling a pre-game conversation with Joshua Kimmich. "Before the game, Jo said to me, 'Can you please shoot on goal now?'. I always do it in training, but in the game I can't find the opportunity."

On Bayern's Resilience

Commenting on the hard-fought victory over Freiburg, Bischof highlighted Bayern's unyielding spirit. "We had some luck, but really wanted it badly," he explained. "We wouldn’t be Bayern if we didn’t believe in ourselves."
