Borussia Mönchengladbach Fullback Joe Scally Draws Interest from Fulham and Bournemouth

Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Joe Scally is on the radar of several clubs as the German side looks to trim and restructure their squad. According to Sky Germany's Marlon Irlbacher, Premier League teams Fulham and Bournemouth are tracking the 23-year-old US international. Olympique Marseille from France has also shown interest.

Initial talks regarding a potential transfer are already in progress, though no club has yet established a clear lead. Scally himself is reportedly receptive to leaving Borussia-Park after five and a half years with the club. His uncertain position within the team was recently highlighted in a tactical preview.

The arrival of Yukhym Konoplya effectively shifted the American outside of head coach Eugen Polanski's primary plans. Even Konoplya's preseason ligament injury has not significantly altered this assessment. Following Konoplya's injury, Gladbach acquired Japanese right-back Daiki Hashioka to fill that role.

Scally's Gladbach Career: A Mixed Bag

After over five years in Germany, Scally has gained considerable Bundesliga experience and become a regular for the US national team. A potential departure would mark the end of a varied tenure with Gladbach.

Scally joined the club from New York City FC as a teenager and quickly proved he could compete at the Bundesliga level. His versatility allowed him to play at right-back, left-back, and later as a wing-back. However, consistent opportunities did not always translate into secure first-team status.

Scally was frequently seen as a player capable of strong individual performances but never fully cemented his place as the undisputed starter. At his best, the Long Island native offered aggressive forward runs, solid defensive contributions, and considerable stamina. During the 2022/23 season, particularly impressive displays on the right flank earned him high ratings among American players in the Bundesliga.

His role, however, was inconsistent. Daniel Farke often favored the experienced Stefan Lainer during parts of the 2022/23 second half of the season, and Gerardo Seoane later experimented with Scally in various defensive setups.

Scally often appeared most at ease as a traditional right-back. When reinstated to that position during the 2023/24 season, his ability to advance play down the flank and support Gladbach's attacking shape remained evident. Nevertheless, the overarching pattern continued: Scally was consistently useful, sometimes excellent, but rarely indispensable.

Joe Scally and Nico Elvedi Both Attract Premier League Interest

Scally is not the only long-serving Gladbach defender whose future has become uncertain. It has been reported that Nico Elvedi has reached a preliminary agreement with Leeds United. Leeds has yet to submit a formal offer to Borussia, but the Swiss international is reportedly willing to move to the Premier League if the clubs can agree on terms.

Scally's USMNT Teammate Has Already Departed

Gladbach has already seen Giovanni Reyna depart after just one season at Borussia-Park. Reyna transferred to Racing Strasbourg last week, with the club's sporting director making it clear that the team aimed to reduce its squad size. Scally could now be the next USMNT player on his way out.
