Why Atalanta picked Juric despite Roma and Southampton flops

Football News

Given his prior working relationships with Gian Piero Gasperini and director Tony D’Amico, Ivan Juric was chosen by Atalanta to succeed Gasperini at the Gewiss Stadium.

Several Italian media outlets, including Sky Sport Italia, have confirmed that Juric is poised to take over as Atalanta`s new manager.

Reasons Behind Atalanta`s Choice of Juric

ROME, ITALY – NOVEMBER 10: AS Roma head coach Ivan Juric looks on during the Serie A match between AS Roma and Bologna at Stadio Olimpico on November 10, 2024 in Rome, Italy.

Gasperini opted to depart La Dea after a nine-year tenure, and he is set to join Roma, who are anticipated to formally announce his signing today.

Juric played under Gasperini during his playing career and later began his coaching path as Gasperini`s assistant.

Furthermore, Juric had a working relationship with current Atalanta director Tony D’Amico at Hellas Verona. These connections were key factors in him being deemed the most appropriate candidate to take over from Gasperini after his long tenure.

Sky Sport Italia reports that Juric is expected to sign a two-year deal with the Bergamo club.

Juric`s Recent Difficulties at Roma and Southampton

As a player, Juric made 365 appearances, with 215 of those under Gasperini`s management. After retiring, he became Gasp`s assistant at both Palermo and briefly at Inter.

Juric experienced a challenging 2024-25 season, being dismissed by Roma after only two months and failing to prevent Southampton`s relegation from the Premier League.

Despite these recent setbacks, his tactical similarities to Gasperini and his strong rapport with D’Amico positioned him as the ideal choice for Atalanta, especially as they prepare for Champions League football next season.
