Werder Bremen Coach Daniel Thioune on Navigating Relegation, Criticism, and Ambition

Bundesliga News

Daniel Thioune, 51, Werder Bremen’s head coach, initially faced challenges but has recently found success, guiding his team closer to Bundesliga safety with three wins in their last four matches. This positive turn has significantly improved the Green-Whites’ league status.

Thioune spoke about the ongoing relegation fight, noting Bremen’s improved position, now seven points ahead of 17th-placed Wolfsburg following a recent victory against them on Matchday 27. He also reflected on the criticism received after a difficult start to his leadership, which included three consecutive losses.

Thioune on the importance of enjoyment amidst the relegation battle:

He stated, “Maintaining a specific equilibrium is crucial. Enjoyment is an integral part of training. While it’s essential to include demanding components, focus on tactical work, and develop content, the element of fun must not be overlooked. Although the public might not always grasp this, I firmly believe that individuals who genuinely enjoy their work and responsibilities ultimately achieve greater success.”

Thioune addresses the criticism directed at him:

Regarding the critiques, he commented, “To some extent, that’s just part of the job. Naturally, after losing three games, the dissenting voices grow louder. However, we’re currently experiencing a more positive spell. I refuse to be swayed by it; my focus remains on the core objectives, and I have unwavering confidence in my approach.”

Thioune shares his career aspirations:

He articulated, “When I enrolled in the football coaching course a decade ago, my objective was to progress as far as possible and establish ambitious targets for myself… My desire is to achieve the absolute maximum.”
