It might sound unconventional, but a striking parallel can be drawn between The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Hulu’s Love Story, the series that briefly chronicled the ill-fated romance of Carolyn Bessett and JFK Jr. Both productions, despite their vastly different subject matter, excel in visual flair and boast several solid performances. Yet, their primary shared deficiency lies in a pervasive lack of significant dramatic stakes for much of their duration. One might pepper its narrative with clever gags about challenging Mario Maker levels, while the other might skillfully deploy a track like Portishead’s ‘Roads’ at a perfectly timed moment. Nevertheless, the underlying issue persists: a noticeable absence of compelling urgency or consequence, making for a somewhat flat viewing experience in both cases.
