Ranieri as Italy Coach? Possible Dual Role with Roma Discussed

Football News

Luciano Spalletti`s tenure as head coach of the Italy national team is set to conclude after the match against Moldova. During the pre-match press conference, Spalletti announced his departure, stating he had been dismissed by Federal President Gabriele Gravina but confirmed his decision to immediately terminate his contract with the FIGC without requesting any severance pay.

Gravina is now actively seeking a successor, with his primary focus consistently being on a highly experienced coach such as Claudio Ranieri. Ranieri, having previously managed Roma before Gian Piero Gasperini took over (with Ivan Juric replacing Gasperini at Atalanta), currently holds a directorial position within the Giallorossi club. Despite Ranieri`s initial hesitant response, Gravina has reportedly persisted, and Ranieri is now said to be more open to considering the Italy job offer.

Reports indicate that Roma`s owners, the Friedkins, have given their conditional approval for Ranieri to potentially take the national team helm: he must retain his advisory role to the American ownership group at Roma. This proposed scenario of a dual role is also reportedly supported by Gravina. A meeting between the Friedkins and Ranieri is anticipated to take place today to explore possibilities and find a solution acceptable to all involved parties.

As an alternative candidate for the national team coaching position, Stefano Pioli is mentioned. The coach currently managing the Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr is reportedly still Fiorentina`s preferred option to replace Palladino, who remains unattached after his departure from the Viola.
