Paris Saint-Germain captain Marquinhos, aged 31, was visibly emotional as Les Parisiens secured their historic first-ever Champions League title in spectacular fashion. The Ligue 1 champions dominated Simone Inzaghi`s Inter Milan, achieving the largest winning margin ever recorded in a UCL final, thanks to goals from Achraf Hakimi, Désiré Doué, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Senny Mayulu. Marquinhos, who joined PSG in 2013 and has experienced the numerous heartbreaks and near-misses in the club`s European campaigns, became an emotional figure as the team finally ended its long wait for Europe`s premier club competition honour.
Speaking to M6, Marquinhos declared the victory was `the greatest day` of his football career. The 31-year-old centre-back took a moment to remember his former teammates who had previously tried and failed in their quest to win the Champions League for PSG. He mentioned, `I think of all the players who have been here and who haven’t succeeded. My idol, Thiago (Silva), Lucas (Moura), Zlatan (Ibrahimovic), Cavani (Edinson), Di Maria (Angel). Many players have come through and they deserved it, too.`
Marquinhos reflected on the 12 years of suffering PSG endured as the Champions League trophy remained out of reach, until now. `It was a big goal. When we arrived, no one believed we could go this far. We’re bringing it home, I’m so happy!` he exclaimed.
