Olivier Giroud Closes Door on France Return: ‘Time for the Youth’

Football News

During his official presentation as a LOSC Lille player, the 38-year-old striker Olivier Giroud confirmed that he has put thoughts of a potential return to the French national team behind him. Despite being France`s all-time leading goalscorer and making a move back to French football, Giroud stated he is no longer considering a call-up to Didier Deschamps` squad, especially with the next FIFA World Cup just over a year away.

Speaking at the press conference, as reported, Giroud was clear about his intentions:

“I’m not thinking about the French National team anymore. I’ve turned the page, time to make way for the youth!”

Giroud joined Lille on a free transfer from MLS side Los Angeles FC, signing a one-year contract with Les Dogues after playing his final match for the American club on Sunday evening. This move marks the 2018 World Cup winner`s return to France`s domestic league after a twelve-year absence. He last played in Ligue 1 in 2012 for Montpellier HSC before his transfer to Arsenal. In his final season with Montpellier, Giroud was instrumental, leading the line and scoring 21 goals as the club secured their historic first-ever league title.
