Borussia Mönchengladbach is reportedly pursuing two key defenders from Germany’s second tier as they look to bolster their squad. With a significant financial injection from a recent player transfer, the club is set to strengthen its defensive options this summer.
Targeting the Left-Back Position
Among the potential acquisitions for the left-back role is David Herold, a 23-year-old from Karlsruher SC. Herold’s contract includes a release clause valued between €3.5 million and €4 million. As his current deal expires in 2027, this transfer window presents a final opportunity for KSC to monetize the player. This season, Herold has made 26 appearances for the 2. Bundesliga side, contributing five assists, with Karlsruher SC currently sitting in eighth place. Mönchengladbach’s current options at left-back include Lukas Ullrich, with midfielder Jens Castrop also occasionally deployed in the position by coach Eugen Polanski.
Strengthening Central Defence
In central defence, where Mönchengladbach has identified a need for both quality and depth, Hertha Berlin’s Linus Gechter is a primary target. The 22-year-old defender has reportedly decided to leave the capital club, attracting interest from five to six Bundesliga teams, with discussions already underway. Mönchengladbach has frequently resorted to using midfielder Philipp Sander as a makeshift central defender, highlighting the urgency to reinforce this area. For both Herold and Gechter, Mönchengladbach can expect strong competition from other top-flight German clubs.
