The latest project from renowned game designer Peter Molyneux, titled Masters of Albion, is preparing for its Steam Early Access debut on April 22nd. Before its official launch, developer 22Cans has announced a limited closed beta test. Those eager to get an early look at this intriguing blend inspired by classics like Fable and Black & White must act swiftly, as the registration period is nearing its end.
For those unfamiliar, Masters of Albion is being presented as a “greatest hits” compilation of Molyneux’s iconic game design principles, drawing heavily from beloved titles such as Dungeon Keeper, Black & White, and Fable. Integrating elements of city-building and business management, the game promises an engaging experience. While such ambitious claims often warrant a degree of cautious optimism, the concept itself is undeniably captivating.
If your interest is piqued, registration for the Masters of Albion closed beta is currently open. While specific details regarding the test phases remain somewhat vague, the developers state their aim is to “gather direct player feedback to help refine and improve the experience ahead of release.” Given the proximity to the Early Access launch, it’s unclear what type of feedback 22Cans is primarily seeking at this stage. Players are directed to the game’s official Discord channel for more information and to access the sign-up form.
The sign-up form includes basic questions about your gaming preferences (especially sim-adjacent titles) and PC specifications. It also asks if you are willing to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). This suggests that if your application is successful and you secure one of the limited beta slots, you might be required to keep any in-game observations confidential.
Urgency is key for prospective testers: the registration window set by 22Cans is remarkably brief, open for only 48 hours. This means the opportunity to sign up will close today, March 25th, at 6 PM GMT.
Masters of Albion certainly appears to hold significant promise. Observing a recent 45-minute gameplay demonstration revealed a game that, for long-time fans of Bullfrog and Lionhead titles, sparks genuine hope. The game seems to combine many cherished elements, making it difficult not to be cautiously optimistic about its potential. However, Molyneux’s past projects have sometimes struggled to fully realize their grand visions, leading to player disappointment. Therefore, a “wait-and-see” approach might be the most prudent strategy. Nonetheless, with its Steam Early Access launch approaching, we should soon gain a clearer understanding of its future.
