Olympique de Marseille is reportedly on the verge of securing the signing of England international Angel Gomes (24). According to Fabrice Hawkins of RMC Sport, Marseille appears set to beat other clubs to his signature.
Gomes will become a free agent this summer as his contract with Lille OSC is set to expire. He has already publicly confirmed his departure from LOSC when his current deal ends, joining fellow key player Jonathan David in leaving Les Dogues.
The midfielder, previously with Manchester United, garnered significant interest from Premier League sides. RMC Sport reported that both Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United were eager to sign Gomes. However, his reported preference is a move to Marseille, where he has reportedly reached an agreement in principle on a three-year contract.
The player is said to have been drawn to the style of play implemented by Roberto De Zerbi at the Vélodrome. Furthermore, Marseille`s qualification for the upcoming season`s UEFA Champions League is also understood to have been a significant factor in convincing him to make the move.
