According to a report from RMC Sport, Olympique de Marseille are considering selling defender Pol Lirola (27) this summer. Head coach Roberto De Zerbi and the club hierarchy consider the Spaniard surplus to requirements for the next season.
Despite a crucial goal that secured a draw against Lyon earlier in the season (2-3), Lirola`s overall performance didn`t take off, and his appearances for `Les Phocéens` were limited. With one year remaining on his contract, Marseille aims to sell Lirola now to prevent him from leaving for free at the end of the 2025-2026 season.
Lirola has always seemed a peripheral player at Marseille. The Spaniard returned to the club after loan spells at Elche (2022-2023 season) and Frosinone (2023-2024 season) and was not initially planned by De Zerbi to feature in the last campaign.
However, Lirola did feature during times when Marseille`s defense was weakened due to injuries and suspensions throughout the past season. `Les Phocéens` hope this year`s summer signings will be sufficient to address these defensive gaps, especially with the upcoming Champions League competition next season.
