According to reports from RMC Sport, Olympique de Marseille is actively seeking to part ways with defender Pol Lirola (27) during the current summer transfer window. The Spanish player is reportedly considered surplus to requirements for the upcoming season by manager Roberto De Zerbi and the club`s management.
Despite scoring a crucial equalising goal against Lyon earlier in the season (in a 2-3 match), Lirola`s campaign largely failed to take off, resulting in limited appearances for Les Phocéens. With just one year remaining on his contract, Marseille is keen to offload Lirola this summer to avoid losing him on a free transfer when his deal concludes at the end of the 2025-2026 season.
Lirola has consistently seemed to be on the periphery of the Olympique squad. The defender returned to the club following recent loan spells at Elche (in 2022-2023) and Frosinone (in 2023-2024) and was not initially expected to be a significant part of De Zerbi`s plans for the past season.
However, Lirola did step in to provide defensive cover at times during OM`s previous campaign when the squad was hit by injuries and suspensions. Les Phocéens are hopeful that their new summer signings will be sufficient to strengthen the defense and fill any gaps, especially as they prepare for Champions League competition next season.
