Marseille in talks to sign Nelson Semedo on a free transfer

Football News

Olympique de Marseille is reportedly engaged in active discussions with 31-year-old Portugal international Nelson Semedo concerning a potential free transfer. Following a reported agreement in principle with Lille midfielder Angel Gomes, OM continues to target players whose contracts are set to expire at the end of June.

Semedo`s current contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers is due to end on June 30th. Despite efforts by the Premier League club to negotiate an extension, a return to mainland Europe appears to be a strong possibility for the player. The right-back, formerly of Barcelona and Benfica, has been a regular starter for Wolves since joining them in 2020 for €32 million.

During the recent season, Semedo featured in 34 Premier League matches, contributing four assists. His notable attributes, including pace, dribbling ability, and stamina, are said to have attracted the interest of Marseille`s new sporting advisor, Medhi Benatia, and club president, Pablo Longoria.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly offered Semedo a contract renewal with improved terms, underscoring their desire to retain him as a key member of the first team. Furthermore, his former club, Benfica, where he progressed through the youth ranks, is also reportedly monitoring the situation and is interested in potentially bringing him back to Lisbon.

Discussions with Semedo are currently ongoing, and a final decision is anticipated relatively soon. However, potential international commitments with Portugal, particularly in upcoming fixtures like the UEFA Nations League, could potentially cause a brief delay in concluding negotiations.
