Olympique de Marseille are reportedly engaged in active negotiations with Portugal international Nelson Semedo, aged 31, regarding a potential free transfer. This move comes as Marseille is seemingly targeting players available out of contract at the end of June, following an agreement in principle with Lille midfielder Angel Gomes.
Semedo`s current contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers is set to expire on June 30th. Despite efforts by the Premier League club to secure his continued presence, a return to mainland Europe appears likely. The experienced right-back, formerly of Barcelona and Benfica, has been a consistent starter for Wolves since his €32 million transfer in 2020.
During the recent season, Semedo made 34 appearances in the Premier League, contributing four assists. His reported pace, dribbling ability, and stamina have reportedly drawn the interest of Marseille`s new sporting advisor, Medhi Benatia, and club president, Pablo Longoria.
Wolves are understood to have presented Semedo with an offer for a contract extension on improved terms, indicating their clear desire to retain him as a key first-team member. Additionally, his former club Benfica, where he originated from the youth ranks, is reportedly monitoring the situation and is interested in facilitating his return to Lisbon.
Discussions between Marseille and Semedo are ongoing, with a decision anticipated in the near future. However, his current international commitments with Portugal in the UEFA Nations League tournament may cause a brief delay in reaching a final agreement.
