Marseille Identify Nayef Aguerd as Key Defensive Target

Football News

Marseille is strengthening its defence this summer. Despite finishing second in Ligue 1 last season, the club`s defence was often considered suspect. New manager Roberto De Zerbi and sporting director Medhi Benatia have identified this area as needing improvement.

Two defensive players have already arrived. CJ Egan-Riley joined OM after his contract with Burnley expired. Facundo Medina also arrived from RC Lens for a substantial fee. Medina is expected to partner with club captain Leonardo Balerdi, provided Balerdi remains at the club, as he is reportedly a target for Juventus, although Marseille aims to retain him.

Further defensive acquisitions could be made. According to L`Équipe, West Ham United defender Nayef Aguerd, aged 29, is a priority target for Les Phocéens. However, interest exists from other clubs abroad for the Moroccan international centre-back. Aguerd also commands a considerable salary at West Ham, who are expected to have significant financial demands for his transfer.
