Marcus Thuram Reflects on Champions League Final and Inter’s Ambitions

Football News

Inter forward Marcus Thuram recently shared his thoughts on various topics, including the UEFA Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain. Speaking while with the team in Seattle, Thuram provided perspective on the significant match lost last season.

On the Champions League Final

“It wasn`t the last opportunity,” Thuram stated regarding the final. “What unfolded is what everyone witnessed: we faced a formidable opponent, arguably the best team globally. On that particular day, nothing seemed to work for us, while everything went right for them. The final score perfectly captured the flow of the game.”

On Competing in Italy

Thuram emphasized Inter`s distinct approach within Italian football. “In Italy, we were the only club that genuinely attempted to win every competition,” he commented. “We didn`t prioritize one tournament over another; we approached all of them with the same level of dedication and effort. I don`t believe football enthusiasts will remember our season solely based on that final match. We competed admirably against strong teams like Barcelona and Bayern [during the campaign]. For me, our Champions League season isn`t defined solely by that single game, the final. We developed significantly as a team, and while that match ended in disappointment, our entire year shouldn`t be judged by that solitary outcome.”

Drawing a Comparison

Referencing NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo, Thuram drew a parallel: “Giannis once said that failing to win the title doesn`t automatically mean you`ve failed overall. That perspective resonates with me and is the correct way to view sports. Naturally, everyone strives to win. However, the journey itself is crucial. If I had the chance to sign up to play in a final every single year, I would do it without hesitation. That`s the aspect we truly need to remember from our experience.”

On Club Legend Chivu and Future Prospects

“Cristian [Chivu] is a true legend of this club. Inter runs through his veins,” Thuram remarked. He reiterated his belief about the final`s significance for the team`s future. “I don`t see that final as having been our last chance. The vast majority of our squad remains under contract with Inter. We didn`t approach it with the mindset that it was our final opportunity. Of course, we are filled with regret about how we lost and having missed an opportunity that could have added a significant achievement to our careers… But we still have numerous seasons ahead of us. I personally still have many years left to play for Inter. It wasn`t the final chance; it was a missed opportunity that we will learn from.”
