Manchester City reportedly remains confident about securing the signing of Rayan Cherki, the 21-year-old from Lyon, this summer. This optimism persists even after the Ligue 1 club rejected City`s initial transfer offer.
Sources indicate that discussions between the two clubs are still active. The attacking midfielder himself is understood to be keen on making the switch to the English Premier League.
City`s first proposal was said to match an unofficial agreement previously made between Cherki and Lyon, his developing club. This agreement stipulated that if Cherki signed a new contract, Lyon would reinstate him into the senior squad and accept an offer of €22.5 million to facilitate his departure. It is also reported that the player has already agreed personal terms with Manchester City.
However, because release clauses are not legally recognised in France, this agreement functions more as a verbal promise. Consequently, Lyon is not compelled to accept the Premier League club`s bid at that figure.
Despite Lyon`s refusal of the opening offer, indications suggest that a move for Cherki to Manchester City is still a likely outcome.
