Liverpool`s management has reportedly finalized the details for the transfer of midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, according to journalist Florian Plettenberg.
Based on the source`s information, the transfer fee is expected to be between 130 and 135 million euros. The player is scheduled to undergo a medical examination next week to complete the transaction. Following the medical, Wirtz is set to sign a contract with Liverpool lasting until the summer of 2030.
The acquisition of Wirtz would represent the most expensive transfer in the history of both Liverpool Football Club and English football overall.
Liverpool`s previous transfer record was established in the summer of 2022 with the signing of Uruguayan forward Darwin Núñez. According to data from Transfermarkt, the club paid 85 million euros for his move.
The current record for the most expensive transfer in English football history is held by the move of Argentinian midfielder Enzo Fernández to Chelsea for 121 million euros in the winter of 2023.
Interestingly, both Darwin Núñez and Enzo Fernández played for Benfica before their respective transfers to England.
The 22-year-old Wirtz joined Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2020. During his tenure with the German club, he appeared in 197 matches across various competitions, netting 57 goals and providing 65 assists. In the 2023/24 season, he was a key part of the team that won the Bundesliga title, the DFB-Pokal (German Cup), and the German Supercup, as well as reaching the Europa League final. Wirtz was also named the best player in the Bundesliga for that season.
