Liga Portugal Takes Decisive Strides Towards Media Rights Centralization

Football News

Liga Portugal acknowledges the concerns that have been raised regarding the Centralization of Audiovisual Rights – a process universally recognized as a fundamental structural transformation essential for the future trajectory of professional football within Portugal.

Significantly, many of these concerns resonate with the current Executive Board. Since assuming leadership a mere 84 days ago, the board has wasted no time, taking swift and firm action on this critical dossier. Their immediate efforts included initiating, for the first time, direct meetings with a diverse range of national and international television operators, prominently featuring major streaming platforms.

Simultaneously, a multi-pronged approach has been adopted to address foundational challenges and promote the sport`s integrity. Constructive meetings have been held with governmental authorities, the National Competition Authority, and all relevant forces of law and order. This comprehensive engagement has involved key national commands, including the PSP, GNR, Polícia Judiciária, SIS, and Civil Protection. The primary objective of these coordinated efforts is a resolute campaign against piracy, coupled with initiatives aimed at educating and raising awareness among fans regarding the importance of consuming content legitimately, thereby supporting their clubs and safeguarding the spectacle.

Further enhancing the league`s global standing, proactive contacts have been established with AICEP, Portugal`s Agency for Investment and Foreign Trade. This collaboration is geared towards enhancing the international promotion and projection of national football. Strengthening bonds within the Portuguese-speaking community has also been a priority, with productive meetings convened with Lusophone countries to reinforce connections and explore synergies.

Technical dialogues are also actively taking place with specialized departments from various other European leagues. These ongoing exchanges serve to facilitate the sharing of valuable experiences and best practices, contributing directly to the increased credibility and standing of Portuguese football on the international stage.

It is imperative to highlight that this extensive body of work is being undertaken with the growing participation and input from the sports societies (the clubs themselves). These entities acknowledge the significant progress already charted and the tangible results achieved in this relatively short period. The overarching objective remains crystalline clear: to meet – and if operationally feasible, even accelerate – the timelines precisely defined by the Government under Decree-Law No. 22-B/2021 concerning this centralization mandate.

Operating with a pronounced sense of responsibility and commitment, the current Liga Portugal Executive Board unequivocally reiterates its position: the centralization of audiovisual rights is not merely a possibility; it is a confirmed certainty moving forward. This stands as a fundamental commitment made to the sports societies, the dedicated fanbase, and the long-term financial health and sustainability of national football. The board is clear in its intent: this transformative objective will be realized through collective effort, actively involving everyone without exception.
