Gattuso The Leading Candidate For Italy Job

Football News

Reports indicate that former Italy international Gennaro Gattuso has emerged as the top contender to become the new head coach of the Azzurri, following Luciano Spalletti`s departure.

Gattuso, a former midfielder for both Milan and the Italian national team and a member of the 2006 World Cup-winning squad, is now reportedly the primary focus for the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).

Earlier reports had also linked other notable figures such as Roberto Mancini, Daniele De Rossi, and Fabio Cannavaro with the potential vacancy.

Claudio Ranieri, a former coach of Roma who currently serves as an advisor to the Giallorossi owners, was initially considered the leading candidate but declined the offer from the FIGC on Tuesday.

Ranieri explained his decision, stating he thanked President Gravina for the opportunity, which he considered a great honour. However, he ultimately chose to remain fully committed to his ongoing role at Roma, citing the full support he received from the Friedkins ownership group.

Stefano Pioli was another name mentioned as a potential successor to Spalletti, but it is understood that the former Milan manager has already reached a verbal agreement to take charge at Fiorentina.

Luciano Spalletti`s final match as Italy coach saw La Nazionale secure a 2-0 victory over Moldova on Tuesday.
