Following their relegation after losing the play-off to FC Metz, Stade de Reims will join AS Saint-Étienne and Montpellier HSC in Ligue 2 next season. These relegated squads often contain valuable talent that becomes available at bargain prices. Players such as Valentin Atangana, Yehvann Diouf, Amadou Koné, and Keito Nakamura from Reims, for example, represent excellent market opportunities. Here are six players from the recently relegated Ligue 1 teams who clubs should consider.
Valentin Atangana (19) – Reims
Despite Reims` relegation, midfielder Valentin Atangana had a debut season in the top flight that showcased his potential for a move. As a France U21 international, his performance saw fluctuations but finished strongly, only struggling in the play-off. Playing a demanding defensive midfield role, he demonstrated good ground coverage, combativeness, and strong ball retention. While sometimes overburdened in a struggling team, his athleticism and profile are attractive for cash-strapped Ligue 1 clubs or even Premier League sides.
Lucas Stassin (20) – Saint-Étienne
Initially struggling after a €10m summer move, forward Lucas Stassin found his form later in the season, becoming Saint-Étienne`s top Ligue 1 scorer with 12 goals. An injury at the end of the season impacted ASSE`s fate. While his finishing can be inconsistent, his goal-poaching ability, direct runs, and link-up play (five assists) make him a difficult opponent for defenders. Reports suggested his form could have earned him a Belgium call-up. Although Saint-Étienne has recently acquired funds and may want €20m, this fee for a 20-year-old striker on the verge of international recognition and proven in Ligue 1 could still be a worthwhile investment given the current market.
Bećir Omeragić (23) – Montpellier
Most of Montpellier`s key players have already left. While promising midfielders Khalil Fayad and Joris Chotard remain, their recent campaigns might limit their market value. However, defender Bećir Omeragić is different. Despite being part of the league`s worst defence, the Swiss international earned credit for his performances. He fits the modern centre-back profile, being composed and progressive on the ball, and effective in a low block. Montpellier`s financial situation necessitates sales, putting buying clubs in a strong position. A fee as low as €5m is rumoured, representing a potential steal for a player of his quality who has attracted Premier League interest.
Yehvann Diouf (25) – Reims
Goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf proved his readiness for an elite club throughout the season, arguably being the main reason Reims avoided automatic relegation. Statistically outstanding, the Ivorian had the best post-shot xG figures in Europe`s top five leagues and made the fifth most saves. Constantly exposed, Diouf was a crucial last line of defence and statistically Ligue 1`s best goalkeeper. At 25, he`s young for a keeper but already wears the armband and has significant experience from his third full season as Reims` No.1, which was his strongest campaign despite the team`s fate. Elite French clubs like OGC Nice and AS Monaco, seeking keepers, should not overlook him.
Zuriko Davitashvili (24) – Saint-Étienne
Zuriko Davitashvili stands out among the relegated players. Part of Georgia`s emerging talent pool alongside Kvaratskhelia and Mikautadze, he achieved a significant return in his first Ligue 1 season with nine goals and eight assists for a relegated side. An eye-catching, direct player, he can sometimes be individualistic, but his profile is increasingly sought after, similar to Rayan Cherki at Lyon. Like Stassin, he might be harder to sign due to Saint-Étienne`s improved finances, making them less desperate sellers. However, having played in Ligue 2 the previous season, Davitashvili will likely be keen to stay in the top flight.
Keito Nakamura (24) – Reims
While Junya Ito and Mamadou Diakhon (linked with the Bundesliga) are also likely departures from Reims, forward Keito Nakamura had the most impactful season among their attackers. Like his compatriot Takumi Minamino, he needed time to adapt but delivered this season, scoring 11 Ligue 1 goals from the wing. A versatile forward with an eye for goal, he now represents an interesting and potentially inexpensive option for numerous Ligue 1 clubs.
