According to a report from Foot Mercato, Eric Smith, the 28-year-old player from St. Pauli, is currently at the top of Olympique Lyonnais` desired signing list.
Lyon is preparing for changes in their defensive line this summer. Duje Caleta-Car is expected to leave, reportedly unhappy with his current situation at the club. Similarly, Warmed Omari will return to his parent club, Stade Rennais, following an unsuccessful loan spell with OL.
Consequently, reinforcements are being sought for defensive positions. As reported by Foot Mercato, Smith, who is capable of playing both as a central defender and in defensive midfield, has emerged as the primary target. Last season, the Swedish player was a key figure for Bundesliga side St. Pauli, starting all 34 matches he played.
While “Les Gones`” interest in Smith is understood to be strong, the club has not yet proceeded with concrete negotiations for a transfer. Lyon`s financial situation is under scrutiny, and they are scheduled to meet with French football`s financial regulatory body, the DNCG, later this month.
