Chancel Mbemba, the 30-year-old DR Congo international defender, has confirmed his departure from Olympique de Marseille. His contract with the club has expired, bringing an end to a difficult season for the player, who did not feature in any matchday squads for Marseille after the appointment of head coach Roberto De Zerbi.
During the previous summer transfer window, the club aimed to significantly reduce their squad size due to a high wage bill and the absence of European competition. While players like Jonathan Clauss, Jordan Veretout, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were sold, reducing the squad proved challenging and complicated regarding Mbemba.
Mbemba was placed in the club`s `loft` – a term for players expected to leave – while Marseille attempted to find him a new club, but a transfer did not materialise. The relationship between the defender and the club became strained, involving sanctions and suspensions. Even after the summer window closed, the club maintained their position, and his return to first-team training only occurred due to legal requirements.
The situation remained unchanged during the winter transfer window. Reports indicated that Mbemba declined an offer from Stade Rennais, confirming that he would stay and see out the remainder of his contract at Marseille until its expiration.
