Chancel Mbemba Confirms Marseille Exit

Football News

Chancel Mbemba, aged 30, has officially announced his departure from Olympique de Marseille following the expiration of his contract. This marks the end of what has been a trying season for the DR Congo international, who did not make a single appearance in a matchday squad since the arrival of new head coach Roberto De Zerbi.

Last summer, the club aimed to significantly reduce the size of their squad due to a substantial wage bill and the absence of European competition. Players such as Jonathan Clauss, Jordan Veretout, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were sold. However, this squad reduction process proved complicated in Mbemba`s case.

Marseille placed Mbemba aside, often referred to as being in the “loft,” while attempting to facilitate a transfer. Despite these efforts, the centre-back remained at the club. Relations between the player and the club reportedly became strained, involving sanctions and suspensions. Even after the summer transfer window closed, Marseille initially maintained their stance, only allowing him to rejoin first-team training later due to legal necessities.

During the subsequent winter transfer window, there was still no movement regarding the defender`s future. Reports indicated that Mbemba declined an offer from Stade Rennais, making it clear that he would see out the remainder of his contract at Marseille until its conclusion.
