Capello predicts mistakes AC Milan won’t repeat under Allegri

Football News

Former AC Milan manager Fabio Capello believes the team will show improved mental resilience under Massimiliano Allegri`s guidance. However, he starkly stated that securing a top-four finish is a must for the Rossoneri, warning that failing to do so would represent another failure.

AC Milan is reportedly nearing an official announcement regarding Allegri`s comeback, more than a decade after his previous tenure. The experienced tactician from Livorno, a winner of six Serie A titles, is expected to take charge of rebuilding a squad that finished outside the European qualification spots last season.

New director Igli Tare is credited with acting quickly to bring back the former Juventus and Milan boss. Capello commented that this decision was crucial for signaling a change after a profoundly disappointing season, suggesting Milan cannot afford further errors and are making a positive move.

Capello expressed strong confidence that Allegri possesses the qualities needed to restore Milan to prominence and anticipates that the inconsistencies and “caprices” observed last season will not be tolerated under his leadership. He sees Allegri`s experience and personality as key assets.

Highlighting Allegri`s immediate potential influence, Capello pointed specifically to the mental aspect of the game. He recalled seeing the team perform well only for short periods last season before losing focus. He noted a discrepancy where attacking effort wasn`t matched by defensive work rate and overall balance – issues he expects Allegri, known for creating cohesive teams with clear objectives, to resolve effectively.

Regarding player personnel, Capello advised against selling midfielder Tijjani Reijnders but acknowledged that if he were to depart, a suitable replacement would be essential.

Capello also shared his perspective on the club`s decision-making process, suggesting that technical choices regarding players should be a collaborative effort between director Tare and coach Allegri, with CEO Giorgio Furlani responsible for approving or rejecting signings based on financial considerations.

Concluding his remarks, Capello was unequivocal about Milan`s primary goal for the 2025-26 season, reiterating his stance: “I don’t know how far they can go, but I know exactly where they must finish. In the top four, otherwise it will surely be another failure.”
