Bungie Drastically Improves Marathon Matchmaking in Isolated Regions

Esports

Bungie has rolled out a significant update for its Marathon game, aiming to help players in geographically isolated areas, such as Australia and South America, find matches more quickly.

This swift update was introduced after numerous reports of prolonged queue times from players situated far from major gaming hubs in North America and Europe, specifically to optimize matchmaking for these remote users.

The root of the initial issue is a common challenge in online multiplayer titles: the balancing act of providing low-latency matches. Titles like Marathon, which utilize dedicated servers, typically prioritize connecting players with low-ping connections to minimize frustration, often pairing them with nearby opponents. This approach, however, often left players in regions far from these servers struggling to find games. This new update brings a promising solution for those impacted. An in-game notification about the change states, “We will continue monitoring the right balance between fast matchmaking times and low-latency matches.”

Marathon players in these remote geographical areas are already online, celebrating the improvements and sharing their initial experiences. A Reddit user named Duendeacdc, when asked about better match quality, commented, “I’ve already played two rounds. It took three and four minutes – I can definitely work with that! The true test will be tomorrow during peak hours.”

Another player, Mclovin_78, shared similar enthusiasm: “I can finally play again. Most North Americans and Europeans simply don’t grasp the sheer frustration of waiting ten minutes to find a match, only to be eliminated in the most ridiculous manner, and then having to face another ten-minute wait at the matchmaking screen.”

Beyond matchmaking, other rapid changes are also being introduced to Marathon. A major annoyance with the Cryo Archive map is being addressed: valuable loot vaults, which previously didn’t always contain crucial subroutine items, will now consistently have them. This adjustment is expected to simplify challenges and overall gameplay within the Cryo Archive.
