Matchday 28 of the Bundesliga concluded at Deutsche Bank Park, where Albert Riera’s Eintracht Frankfurt hosted a revitalized Köln, with both clubs still having significant objectives for the season’s conclusion.
Following Bayern’s dramatic late comeback against Freiburg on Saturday, Frankfurt aimed to solidify their seventh-place position, a spot that could secure European qualification for the next campaign. Meanwhile, Köln, now under the interim leadership of René Wagner, faced mounting pressure in their desperate struggle to avoid relegation from the Bundesliga.
Frankfurt’s Spanish coach, Riera, made three alterations to the starting lineup that had previously suffered a 2-1 defeat to Mainz. Injuries sidelined Nnamdi Collins and Jean-Mattéo Bahoya, while Farès Chaïbi was benched for the Sunday fixture. Robin Koch, Oscar Højlund, and Ansgar Knauff were integrated into a revised Eintracht squad. Across the pitch, Köln’s new manager, Wagner, implemented four changes from the team that drew 3-3 with Borussia Mönchengladbach under Kwasniok.
The match nearly started disastrously for the home side when Michael Zetterer mishandled a shot from Jakub Kamiński, spilling it directly into the path of the surging Ragnar Ache. However, Zetterer quickly recovered to block Ache’s follow-up attempt.
Frankfurt quickly established possession dominance, frequently finding joy on the left flank via Arnaud Kalimuendo. Their most significant early opportunity arose when Hugo Larsson delivered a superb through ball to Ansgar Knauff. Despite intense pressure from Kristoffer Lund, Knauff managed to get a shot away, forcing a strong save from Marvin Schwabe to maintain parity.
Köln adopted a counter-attacking strategy, a tactic they appeared comfortable with, and almost broke the deadlock. Said El Mala skillfully evaded Koch and Aurèle Amenda on the edge of the penalty area, creating a sliver of space before sending his shot narrowly wide.
Frankfurt maintained control of possession but squandered what was arguably the game’s clearest opportunity. Oscar Højlund threaded a pass to Arnaud Kalimuendo, sending him clear on goal against Schwabe. Unfortunately for Frankfurt, Kalimuendo struck his shot with his weaker left foot directly at the Köln goalkeeper.
The first half, brimming with scoring opportunities, concluded with another chance for Köln. El Mala breached the defense and found Kamiński, but the Pole’s initial touch was heavy, allowing Zetterer to quickly smother the ball before a shot could be taken.
The second half mirrored the first in its openness, with numerous chances for both sides, and it wasn’t long before the game truly ignited.
Frankfurt finally broke the stalemate in the 65th minute. Substitute Farès Chaïbi skillfully bypassed his defenders before delivering a precise pass to Jonathan Burkardt just a few yards from the net. The German striker confidently converted, netting his 10th league goal of the campaign and putting his team ahead.
Their lead was swiftly doubled. Burkardt, already on the scoresheet, crossed towards Amaimouni-Echghouyabe. The Spaniard couldn’t quite control the ball, which then fell to Kalimuendo, who made no mistake, clinically firing past Schwabe.
Moments later, the goals continued, but this time Köln struck back. Jakub Kamiński surged forward, cut in from the flank, and dribbled past two opponents before his deflected shot found the back of the net past Zetterer, halving the deficit.
With renewed vigor, Köln pressed for an equalizer and were unlucky not to find it when Ache set up El Mala, whose shot was superbly saved by Zetterer. Undeterred, Köln’s resolve paid off in the 82nd minute when Wagner made a triple substitution. Within a mere 34 seconds, two of the fresh players combined to restore parity. Lund’s deep cross to the far post found Marius Bülter, who then picked out an unmarked Alessio Castro-Montes in a prime scoring position, allowing the Belgian to tap in effortlessly.
Upon the final whistle, players from both teams collapsed in exhaustion, a testament to the exhilarating second-half spectacle. Each side likely harbored disappointment at not securing the full three points.
