Braga, Portugal – In an era where digital screens often claim the attention of the young, a refreshing initiative is actively reclaiming outdoor spaces for genuine play and community spirit. The city of Braga recently celebrated the inauguration of its very own FOOTPARK, the eighth mini-pitch to be launched across Portugal as part of an ambitious national project. This initiative, spearheaded by the Liga Portugal Football Foundation and Missão Continente, aims to install or refurbish 32 such facilities nationwide by 2027, fostering health, social inclusion, and a love for sport among local communities.

A Champion`s Endorsement for Grassroots Glory
The new FOOTPARK, strategically located on Rua Fernando Castiço, received a prestigious blessing from none other than Alan, the revered former player of SC Braga. As the godfather of this new facility, Alan`s connection to the city runs deep, making his involvement particularly resonant. His message was clear and direct, a sentiment many parents can undoubtedly appreciate:
“I am very happy to sponsor this wonderful space where our young people can enjoy themselves. They can play football, basketball, and do sports in general, which is very good for their health. It’s also good to get young people out of the house, away from their phones, while they are here having fun with friends.”
It`s an almost revolutionary concept in a world increasingly tethered to handheld devices: collective enjoyment, physical exertion, and the simple joy of a ball at one`s feet. The dozens of children present at the ceremony wasted no time in testing the new turf, a testament to the immediate appeal of such a dedicated space.

Community, Collaboration, and the Cries of Future “Warriors”
The inauguration was more than just a ribbon-cutting; it was a gathering of key stakeholders united by a common vision. Dra. Sameiro Araújo, Vice-President of the Braga City Council, articulated the local demand for such facilities:
“We have many sports venues, but they are never enough for the number of children and young people we have in Braga who love to practice sports. The City Council is extremely grateful to the Football Foundation and Missão Continente for providing us with this partnership and for building such a pleasant and friendly space that will make thousands of children very happy.”
This sentiment was echoed by Pedro Sousa, President of the Braga Football Association, who highlighted the broader developmental role of sports: “Football and sport are drivers of human, relational, and social competencies and values in non-formal education spaces.” It’s an astute observation, acknowledging that a kickabout on a mini-pitch can teach as much about teamwork and resilience as any classroom lesson.
From the perspective of SC Braga, Marketing Director João Cunha underlined the FOOTPARK`s importance in promoting healthy lifestyles. With a hopeful glint, he mused, “Who knows if the next star of the Warriors won`t be born from here!” A delightful thought, that perhaps the next national hero or international sensation is, at this very moment, honing their skills on this very turf, oblivious to the grand trajectory their playful kicks might one day take.

Beyond the Pitch: A Social Responsibility Power Play
The project`s reach extends beyond immediate athletic development. Joaquim Fernandes, Director of Continente Braga Minho Center, emphasized the role of sport as an “aggregating element,” effectively leveraging the social responsibility initiatives of Missão Continente and the Football Foundation. These partnerships with local municipalities aim to revitalize public spaces, offering inhabitants and visitors alike a free avenue for an active lifestyle.
Paulo de Mariz Rozeira, Executive Director of Liga Portugal, underscored the strategic importance of the FOOTPARK project. He praised the unwavering support from Missão Continente and the local authorities, affirming its perfect placement “in a neighborhood with many children,” ensuring intense and joyful utilization. The ultimate goal, he stated, is for these spaces to be “open to the community and well enjoyed.”
A National Vision, One Pitch at a Time
Braga`s FOOTPARK is the latest chapter in a compelling narrative that has already seen similar spaces established in Matosinhos, Lousã, Mangualde, Vila do Conde, Águeda, Torres Vedras, and Felgueiras. Each new park is a step closer to the national target of 32 facilities, collectively promoting healthy living, social inclusion, and overall community well-being through the universal language of sport.
The inauguration concluded with symbolic gestures – the signing of a football and the unveiling of the plaque – sealing the commitment of all involved parties to youth, sports, and the vibrant local community. It serves as a powerful reminder that while the world rushes forward with technological advancements, the fundamental need for open spaces, active play, and human connection remains as vital as ever.
