Borussia Dortmund’s central defender, Nico Schlotterbeck, aged 26, is reportedly once again attracting significant interest from prominent Premier League clubs. Despite previous indications last week that a contract extension at Dortmund was nearing completion, which would have concluded a lengthy negotiation period, Schlotterbeck personally confirmed that no agreement had been finalized following Germany’s recent 2-1 triumph over Ghana.
Several factors appear to be influencing the delay in the defender’s commitment to a new deal. One potential reason is Schlotterbeck’s desire to re-evaluate and renegotiate his salary and release clause with the club’s newly appointed sporting director, Nils-Ole Book.
Interest from English Giants
Adding another layer to the situation is the renewed attention the robust defender is receiving from England’s top tier. Both Liverpool and Manchester United have reportedly heightened their interest in Schlotterbeck. With each passing day that an extension remains unsigned, Borussia Dortmund’s leverage in securing the 26-year-old’s long-term future at the club diminishes.
It is being suggested that Schlotterbeck might be contemplating a move away from the German side following the conclusion of the upcoming World Cup.
