Atletico Madrid Announce Signing of Italian Defender Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta

Atletico Madrid has officially announced the acquisition of Italian defender Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta.

According to a statement from the club, Atlético de Madrid and Atalanta have finalized a transfer agreement for Matteo Ruggeri. The 22-year-old Italian left-back has penned a contract with the Madrid side that runs until June 30, 2030.

Born on July 11, 2002, in San Giovanni Bianco, Lombardy, Ruggeri began his football journey in Atalanta`s youth system at age nine. He made his senior debut for the club at 18 on November 3, 2020, in a Champions League fixture against Liverpool.

Recognized for his strong crossing and endurance, the left-back spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Salernitana. Upon his return to Atalanta the subsequent season, he became a key player under manager Gian Piero Gasperini.

Ruggeri`s Performance at Atalanta

Following 15 appearances in the 2022/23 season, Ruggeri had a breakout year in 2023/24, featuring in 48 games across all competitions. His impressive form earned him a spot in the UEFA Europa League Team of the Season, where he played alongside Juan Musso, who he now reunites with at Atleti.

A consistent presence in Italy`s youth international teams, he received his first call-up to the senior Azzurri squad in March 2025 for the Nations League quarter-final against Germany.

According to reports from Italian sources, the transfer fee for the left wing-back is approximately €20 million.

The 22-year-old, who came through Atalanta`s academy, accumulated 99 Serie A appearances for La Dea, registering nine assists. He also featured nine times for the Nerazzurri in the Champions League.

Despite being called up in March, Ruggeri is yet to make his senior debut for the Italian national team.
