Legendary coach Arrigo Sacchi, in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, shared his perspective on Simone Inzaghi`s departure from Inter Milan. Sacchi commented, “It seems quite clear to me that money played a decisive role in this situation, and I`m uncertain if chasing financial gain is always the wisest choice. Only time will ultimately reveal whether it was the right move for him. Personally, in my first year managing Milan, I actually earned less than I did previously at Parma.”
Sacchi admitted he wasn`t entirely taken aback by the news. “It wasn`t a complete surprise; I had somewhat anticipated it,” he stated. “While I won`t delve into his personal reasons for wanting to leave Inter – he undoubtedly has valid motivations that shouldn`t be scrutinised – I must point out that the Nerazzurri club provided him with significant opportunities, allowing him to reach two Champions League finals. Furthermore, the current period isn`t the most stable for the club environment following recent setbacks. Perhaps a bit more time for reflection, a few more conversations, could have been beneficial.”
Evaluating Inzaghi`s performance based on results, Sacchi highlighted: “Over four league seasons, he secured only one Scudetto, despite consistently having the strongest squad at his disposal, filled with high-level, well-compensated players. He reached two Champions League finals, losing both, with the most recent defeat being particularly painful or traumatic. Based on these outcomes, I cannot describe his tenure as having been positive. Nevertheless, I must acknowledge that Inzaghi has indeed developed considerably as a coach since joining from Lazio. He just seemed to lack that final, decisive breakthrough.”
